Feliz vacaciones!

Ah, Semana Santa. Holy Week- it's finally here. It feels so good to know that tomorrow I'll get to board a bus and then a taxi and then a plane. I'll get to travel, look out the window and write. And finally- reach my parents in Costa Rica for a little adventure. It's bound to be crazy. Semana Santa is the only time when everyone in all of Central America is off from school and work. Everyone travels. What will my parents think of this hot, little tropical region? The plumbing? The food? The people? I'll have a lot to report.

Today, Santa Clara celebrated Dia del Padre, or Honduran Father's Day. Father's Day is like a national holiday here and is big drama. We cancelled classes, set up tents and a stage, decorated like wild and had a huge event for all of the papis. My kids performed the song "Amor Eterno," dedicated to all of the fathers who were no longer with us. Today was a day of mixed emotions for all. First of all, it's hard to celebrate Father's Day when 1) many kids don't know who their fathers are 2) tons of kids have fathers in the States, and 3) there are kids being raised only by grandparents or aunts and uncles. So, there was happy applause by proud fathers watching cute performances and there was unspoken sadness for all the kids who didn't get to fully participate in the day.

Tomorrow, I'm off for a much needed vacation. A todos: feliz vacaciones y Semana Santa. La paz!
